James River Regional Cleanup

James River Advisory Council
James River Cleanup

June 14, 2008, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Register for the cleanup!

In its eighth year, the James River Regional Cleanup, sponsored by the James River Advisory Council, continues to grow. Past events have seen hundreds of volunteers on foot and in boats dedicate part of a day to collect litter from the shoreline and water. The success of the event has steadily grown, as has the educational component of the cleanup. In cleaning up the James, the volunteers are creating awareness about the need to take care of an invaluable natural resource, while also learning about the dynamics of a watershed, which includes more than just the river. Much of the litter collected was actually discarded at points upriver, in roadside ditches that drain to the river and adjoining streams, and along tributaries that flow into the James.

Activities west of Mayo’s Island are above the fall line (non-tidal) and primarily involve the cleanup of shoreline debris that is accessible by foot or by small boats, such as canoes. Activities east of Falling Creek are below the fall line (tidal), largely requiring the use of recreational vessels, such as larger johnboats, bass boats and runabouts. Whether by foot or boat, cleanup activities are available to volunteers at each of the official cleanup sites listed in this brochure. Other volunteer opportunities include assistance with registration, cooking, information and special projects.

Boaters Needed!

Boaters are needed to participate in the 2008 James River Regional Cleanup June 14, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Each year, volunteers on foot and in boats dedicate part of a Saturday to collect litter sitting on the shorelines and floating in the water. Boaters are particularly needed on the tidal portion of the James below Richmond. The cleanup is sponsored by the James River Advisory Council. Launch sites are:  Dutch Gap Boat Landing (Chesterfield County) or Osborne Park and Boat Landing (Henrico County).
